{"id":20351,"date":"2023-04-26T13:48:07","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T13:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peacerep.org\/?p=20351"},"modified":"2023-12-11T09:14:22","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T09:14:22","slug":"jan-pospisil-sudan-conflict-insights-on-bbc-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gentest.cahss.ed.ac.uk\/dev-peacerep\/2023\/04\/26\/jan-pospisil-sudan-conflict-insights-on-bbc-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan Pospisil shares Sudan conflict insights on BBC Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a tenuous ceasefire in effect and thousands fleeing the country, the world\u2019s attention is focused on Sudan as the effects of the ongoing civil conflict are being felt on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>As peace-builders and mediators seek out avenues for peace negotiations, researchers and experts have been sharing insights on the background to the current conflict.<\/p>\n<p>PeaceRep\u2019s Dr Jan Pospisil, A<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">ssociate Professor at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">, featured on Nicky Campbelll\u2019a live BBC Radio 5 programme on 25 April, to share insights on the current conflict from his research findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Pospisil discussed how fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum is ultimately causing the most detriment to the city\u2019s civilians, due to the strategic location of the army\u2019s military installations within the city. The location of military installations also means that the conflict occurring is not a \u201cwar of control\u201d, according to Dr Pospisil, but rather a \u201ccat-and-mouse game\u201d for the military groups involved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m001lbb7\">Listen back to the radio programme on BBC Sounds<\/a> (Dr Pospisil features from 04:00)<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pospisil\u2019s latest PeaceRep report was published on Monday 24 April, discussing how insistence on one unitary peace process for Sudan has resulted in rising tensions between the military regime and the civilian opposition, resulting in conflict escalating to a point of open civil war. The report outlines progress in a peaceful transition for Sudan requires an approach that accepts \u201cthe multiplicity of complementing and, at times, competing processes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peacerep.org\/publication\/post-architecture-transition-management-in-sudan\/\">Access the report \u2013 Post Architecture: The Competitive Marketplace of Transition Management in Sudan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As recent events in Sudan demonstrate, the quest for short-term stabilisation can fail, undermining long-term peacebuilding and democratisation and resulting in the outbreak of armed violence. A unitary approach to peace process mediation can create significant stumbling blocks for transitional progress.
