On 27 February 2025, audiences gathered in Edinburgh for a film screening of Devi<\/em><\/a>, an award-winning documentary exploring the life and work of Nepalese human rights defender Devi Khadka.<\/p>\n

The film follows Devi\u2019s fight for justice against those who seek to erase rape from the history of Nepal\u2019s civil war. As she challenges this systemic silence, Devi confronts her own demons as a survivor of sexual violence.<\/p>\n

The screening, hosted by PeaceRep, GENDER.ED<\/a>, and the Global Justice Academy<\/a> at the University of Edinburgh, was followed by a thought-provoking Q&A with the film\u2019s director, Subina Shrestha, chaired by Chancellor\u2019s Fellow Kathryn Nash.<\/p>\n

During the discussion, GENDER.ED Associate Director Kaveri Qureshi prompted Subina to reflect on her collaboration with Devi and the film\u2019s impact since its release. The panel also explored the power of storytelling and the responsibility it places on certain individuals to bring critical issues to light.<\/p>\n

Devi confronts difficult themes, including trauma and sexual violence. While there is much work still to be done, the conversation delved into the incredible impact Devi Khadka has had on Nepal over the past five years.<\/p>\n
